In secret tapes, palm oil execs disclose corruption, brutality

Global Witness, an environmental and human rights organization, sent undercover investigators to get the scoop

Global Witness’s two-year investigation is a rare behind-the-scenes look at the corruption, labor abuses and destructive environmental practices in an industry that is clearing carbon-rich rainforests and emitting greenhouse gases at a rate that has become a growing concern for climate scientists. The world’s most common vegetable oil has spawned vast fortunes, while coming under scrutiny for its labor practices and environmental impact.

Beyond Neoliberal Trade

The growth of trade and the deepening of financial links over the past several decades has gone hand in hand with the re-entrenchment of a rigid ideological vision of how the international economy functions, and of the external policies that national governments should be encouraged, or permitted, to follow—the so-called Washington Consensus. This consensus has never been absolutely hegemonic, however, and its star has dimmed considerably since its heyday in the 1990s.

Why the Left Should Embrace Brexit

The Left’s anti-Brexit hysteria, however, is based on a mixture of bad economics, flawed understanding of the European Union, and lack of political imagination. Not only is there no reason to believe that Brexit would be an economic apocalypse; more importantly, abandoning the EU provides the British left — and the European left more generally — with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to show that a radical break with neoliberalism, and with the institutions that support it, is possible.

Is This the End of Neoliberal Globalization? ($)

The ideology underpinning neoliberal globalization demands that all markets and exchanges, large and small, global and local, be optimized for profit. This has been the mantra of corporate executives and elites for the past four decades. Empty hospital beds cost money. Local production is too expensive. Stockpiles of surgical masks and ventilators are a waste of money. Community hospitals in poor and rural counties won’t turn a profit, so they must be closed.
